Thousands of generous donations have come together to elevate BC’s leading critical care hospital, thanks to the new Acute Care Tower

NEW WESTMINSTER, BC, November 30, 2022 /CNW/ – Today, the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation is honored to announce a transformational gift of $30 million of a renowned Canadian philanthropist and business leader Jim Pattisson. This gift will add to the combined contributions of thousands of gracious donors, supporting the second phase of the Royal Columbian Hospital’s redevelopment project, focusing on the acute care tower – to be named the Jim Pattison Acute Care Tower.

The Royal Columbian is undergoing one of the most ambitious hospital redevelopments in Canadian history. The $1.49 billion represents an unprecedented opportunity – and challenge – to improve critical care at a hospital that serves one-third of British Columbia’s population. With construction slated for completion in 2025, the Acute Care Tower is the crown jewel of the project.

As a regional referral hospital for cardiac, trauma, neuroscience, high-risk maternity and neonatal intensive care, Royal Columbian provides the highest standard of care for some of the most seriously ill and injured patients in Province. No other hospital in British Columbia provides all of these services, at this level of care, at one site.

Building on Royal Columbian’s heritage, the new acute care tower will feature an interventional super floor including operating theaters and suites for interventional radiology and cardiology, a new emergency department with its own emergency unit imaging and new larger maternity, pediatric and neonatal intensive care units. , as well as several floors for acute and critical care patients. With almost double the current footprint, the redevelopment will increase Royal Columbian’s capacity by approximately 50% to 675 beds.

Patients, doctors, nurses and the whole hospital family will benefit greatly from the updated acute care tower. In addition to a larger footprint, the new tower will feature substantial improvements in cutting-edge technologies, so healthcare teams can continue to meet the needs of patients in their most urgent and life-changing moments and provide the best possible results. Upgrades will include the introduction of innovative robot-assisted surgery and state-of-the-art imaging technology that enables absolute precision.
