safest cities in the world, according to The Economist

by Ainsley Ingram

The advance of vaccination is starting to reactivate tourism across the world. Thinking about the best destinations, The Economist magazine published the Safe Cities Index 2021, which lists the 60 safest cities in the world to visit.

Among the criteria are 76 indicators of public safety, infrastructure, response to covid-19 and, for the first time, environmental safety. Five main themes are analyzed: personal safety, health, infrastructure, digital security and environmental security.

Find out which are the safest cities in the world:

1 – Copenhagen
The capital of Denmark tops the rankings for its low crime rate and high personal safety. The magazine emphasizes that the LGBTQIA + population or any minority should feel safe in the city.

“A key factor that makes Copenhagen such a safe city is the low crime rate, currently at its lowest level in over a decade. Copenhagen is also characterized by high social cohesion and low social inequalities,” said the publication.

2 – Toronto
One of the cities that is still in the top 7 this year was in second place. The Canadian city of Toronto has a strong public education system and was the target of a major covid-19 vaccination campaign, in which people could be vaccinated at home.

The Economist also cites 3 arguments: strong resistance against all types of prejudice, public education and security.

3 – Singapore
With one of the highest vaccination rates in the world, the city-state is an example of the fight against the coronavirus and has recorded just 315 deaths from covid-19. Singapore is also a highlight of digital security.

4 – Sidney
Australia’s largest city, one of the first countries to close its borders and lockdown during the pandemic, appears due to low levels of covid-19 contamination. In addition, the city is at the top of the digital security ranking and appears as a benchmark in terms of infrastructure and personal security.

5 – Tokyo
The capital of Japan, which hosted the Olympic Games this year, stands out in terms of public health, infrastructure and personal safety (very low crime rate), in addition to being at the forefront of the fight against the coronavirus.
