Wow cool – Canada’s National Police Service said two Roman Catholic churches located on First Nations land caught fire. The fires were spotted Monday (6/21) morning, which is National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada.
The incident took place in the province of British Columbia where, less than a month ago, the skeletal remains of hundreds of children buried in old school buildings were discovered. This discovery rekindled anger against Canada and the Catholic Church’s treatment of the Indigenous population.
Sergeant Jason Bayda, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) spokesperson for the Penticton South Okanagan area, said in a statement that the two wooden churches had burnt down. “The police consider the fire to be suspect,” he said on Monday (6/21).
The first fire at Sacred Heart Church on Penticton Indian Band Estate was discovered by officers at around 1:20 a.m. While the St. Gregory Church fire in Indian Band country ‘Osoyoos was found at 3:10 a.m. The two churches are 27 miles apart.
Bayda has confirmed that he will investigate the fire. If indeed this fire was intentional, then they would look at all possible motives to find out the facts. He will not speculate on the motive.
“If our investigation considers this fire to be arson, the RCMP will consider all possible grounds and let the facts and evidence guide our investigative actions,” Bayda said. “We are sensitive to recent events but will not speculate on the motive.”
The fire started after the Tk’emlupste Secwépemc First Nation said late last month it had found the remains of 215 children at the former Kamloops Indian Housing School. The school was operated by the Catholic Church from 1890 to 1969 before being taken over by the Canadian government and closing in 1978.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a Catholic, has asked the church to apologize after the discovery. But Pope Francis only expressed his “sadness” and “closeness to the Canadian people” in the face of the tragedy without apologizing.
