Good Neighbor Open Mic Night, Alberta’s Kerala Canadian Cultural Association and comedian Dara ÓBriain’s Voice of Reason Tour provide summer diversity

Edmonton used to call itself The Festival City and residents of St. Alberta flocked to its events. But the pandemic has forced us to rethink our choices and for the past two years, the organizers of shows in our city have widened their scope of action.

Next week features a diverse lineup of dynamic and entertaining performers from around the world.

Good night neighborhood

The great strength of Arden Theater’s Plaza Series is that it features some of the best singer-songwriters in the province. From seasoned musicians to emerging raw talent, the series always creates a great vibe.

As summer draws to a close, visitors can find some of the best and brightest up-and-coming singer-songwriters across Good Neighbor Open Mic Night Thursday, August 25.

Hosted by Amplify, it’s a celebration of 10 young singer-songwriters honing their craft. Performers include Nick Lumley, Trey Maruyama, Tommy Schaaf, Asher Halinda, Ayla Chin, Darragh McManus, Jaimi Rempel and Jake Alexander Souch. In addition, Ange Caroline and Amy Polczer are the masters of ceremonies for the evening and will play a 20-minute set.

The 90-minute showcase begins at 7:30 p.m. at St. Albert Place Plaza, 5 Sainte-Anne Street. Tickets are priced to pay what you can. All individual theater-style seats and premium tables are priced between $5 and $15. Visit www.stalbert.ca for more information.

Mijiv-22

The Kerala Canadian Cultural Association of Alberta is ready to bring a touch of India and the Middle East to Mijiv-22 Saturday, August 20 at 7 p.m.

The dazzling multicultural extravaganza includes a concert by youth group Octave Remixed, some rhythm moves from the University of Alberta Bollywood Dance Club and some Middle Eastern dances from Desert Rose Dance Studio. Another major highlight is the Shivamanohari School of Performing Arts, which offers classical Indian dance.

Mijiv-22 takes place at the Arden Theatre, 5 St. Anne St. Ticket prices are $15 for adults, $10 for youth five to 15, and children under five are free. Visit www.stalbert.ca for more information

British comedy

Just for Laughs is delighted to announce Irish comedian Dara Ó Briain, who will bring her Voice of Reason Tour at the Arden Theater on Wednesday, August 31.

Ó Briain is an Irish comedian and television presenter. He is one of the most recognized and in-demand personalities in British comedy. In addition to doing stand-up, he hosted thematic shows such as Make fun of the week, Live Stargazing, robot wars, and Blockbuster movie.

Through the Voice of Reason Tour, Ó Briain tackles virtual reality issues, having too much tech in the home, dealing with missing customers from the front row, and dealing with reports of your own disappearance.

The show is at 7 p.m. at 5, rue Sainte-Anne. Tickets are $45 and are available at www.stalbert.ca.
