Sanctions against Russia in general and the Urals in particular

The International Military Sports Council (CISM) has waived anti-Russian sanctions. According to the press service of the organization, all the countries participating in the committee can receive military delegations from Russia.

CISM is the only international sports organization in the world that has refused to support the IOC’s recommended sanctions against Russia. “All CISM member countries are free to receive military delegations from Russia and participate in CISM events held in our country,” said CISM President General Hervé Piccirillo.

The organization’s impartial attitude towards Russia is evidenced by the decision of the CISM Board of Directors to select Russian paratrooper Sergeant Vlada Krivenko as the winner of CISM’s annual Athlete of the Year 2021 award. She placed first in the individual event, team event, individual precision and group jump at the 44th CISM World Parachuting Championships. The selection of the winners of the “Best CISM Athlete 2021” award took place in Austria on March 30, 2022.

CISM brings together military athletes from 140 countries around the world. The committee includes, among others, Belgium, France, Denmark, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Every year, CISM organizes up to 25 world championships in various sports.

EU countries, as well as the United States, Canada, Japan and a number of other states have imposed severe sanctions against Russia due to the Russian special operation in Ukraine. Sanctions pressure on Russia has been going on since the early 2000s and has intensified in recent months. Sanctions have also affected athletes. Thus, the International Paralympic Committee suspended Russian athletes from the Paralympic Games in Beijing.
