The Canadian province of Saskatchewan announced on Tuesday the lifting of all covid-19 restrictions, including the use of masks and the requirement of vaccinations inside restaurants, while truckers continue to occupy Ottawa with similar requests.
Alberta is expected to follow suit soon, despite opposition from medical and nursing staff, and Quebec has announced it will roll out the easing of restrictions.
Most of the measures applied in Saskatchewan, derived from the outbreak of the delta variant across Canada, will be lifted at midnight on Sunday.
Until the end of February, certain requirements will be maintained, such as the use of masks in closed rooms and quarantine for those who test positive for covid-19.
“This policy has run its course,” Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe told a news conference.
The official said more than 80% of the people of Saskatchewan have received two doses of the vaccine, and about half have received the booster, so now is the time to treat covid as endemic.
Alberta Premier Jason Kenney has offered to gradually ease restrictions in his province in phases and will provide details later this week.
Meanwhile, his Quebec counterpart, François Legault, announced on Tuesday that the lifting of measures against covid will take place in mid-March.
“We will have to learn to live with the virus. There may be a sixth wave eventually, but we will have to live with the covid, ”anticipated Legault.
Moe contracted the virus last month and supported the convoy of truckers who came to Ottawa to demand exemption from vaccination requirements for travelers between Canada and the United States.
Last week, he said in a video addressed to Canadians that “it was time” to regain freedom and “get back to normal life”.
