3D CityScapes is one of the last 15 winners.
Toronto-based startup 3D CityScapes (3DCS) is the only Canadian finalist to win a spot in the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) Japan Challenge for Society 5.0.
Founded in 2019, 3DCS is a 3D visualization technology provider, specializing in the creation of interactive 3D environments, assets and digital twins, which are visual representations that serve as a real-time digital counterpart of a physical object .
“This contest was a way to show what we do best and build strong partnerships overseas.”
Real estate developers, municipalities, city planners, port authorities, and architects use the 3DCS platform to deliver 3D applications for marketing, planning, predictive analytics, cinematic video production, and more.
JETRO’s competition aims to solve the problems that Japanese society is facing. According to JETRO, these issues are: respect for the environment; labor shortage and productivity improvement; as well as building a “smarter and more resilient Japan”.
3DCS was one of 292 applicants from 53 countries and regions to submit its solution in the competition.

JETRO released a shortlist of 45 applicants in September last year. A 3DCS spokesperson confirmed that six Canadian companies traveled to the second turn. These include BrainBox AI, JITbase, ThisFish Inc., Upbrella, Pantonium and 3D CityScapes, the only Canadian tech startup to exit the round.
3DCS’ visualization platform won the “Smart and Resilient Japan” category, finishing among three other group companies.
By being named one of the final winners, 3DCS has the opportunity to travel to Japan to partner with Japanese companies and municipalities. The company will also benefit from a virtual mentorship of 12 people to help it conduct its business in Japan.
“Japan is a leader in the global smart cities initiative and 3DCS wants to be at the forefront of providing 3D visualization for these cities,” 3DCS told BetaKit. “This contest was a way to show what we do best and build strong partnerships overseas.”
This wasn’t 3DCS’ first win in competition. In 2020the startup also received the Epic MegaGrant, a $100 million program designed to support individuals doing exceptional work for the 3D graphics community.
