Sudbyry: A total of 39 workers are trapped in an underground mine called Totten Mine in Sudbury, Canada, according to media reports CTV last Monday. They were all trapped after an incident that damaged the mine tunnel area last Sunday around 11:30 am local time.

Report from the CGTN page, Tuesday, September 28, 2021, a rescue team was on site to try to bring 39 workers to the surface.

Canadian authorities have so far not disclosed other details, including the purpose of the incident, the cause and the identity of the workers.

Vale, the company that owns the Totten mine in Canada, confirmed that 39 of their workers were trapped underground, but all were safe.

“We are mobilizing them out of the mine via a secondary ladder system,” Vale said in a press release.

Vale spokeswoman Danica Pagnutti said workers should be able to use a ladder system with a number of resting points along the mine area.

Pagnutti said 39 Vale workers were trapped in an area approximately 914 to 1,219 meters from the surface. For comparison, the CN Tower in Toronto has a height of up to 550 meters.

According to Vale’s statement, trapped workers have access to food and potable water in the mine’s staging areas. They can also still use the phone to coordinate with Vale and contact the family.

“We are doing everything possible to ensure the safety of all workers,” Pagnutti said.

“They can contact their families from there, and we are also in constant contact with their families. So now we are focusing on worker safety,” he concluded.
